Starting in the mid 15th century all the way through the mid 18th century, Europeans had trade set up with Africa. It was a symbiotic relationship that lasted a long time until Europeans and Americans realized they wanted more. Around 1850 there were only a few European settlements, until the later 19th century when they started further exploration of the interior of the continent. by 1914 the "scramble for Africa" had almost ended and European and American countries had almost completely claimed the land. The land was rich with gold, ivory, and palm oil that the imperialists used to be manufactured in their own countries.

The Scramble for Africa
The scramble for Africa more than anything helped to pull european countries apart. They weren't united fighting against a country, but forced against each other. They also treated Africa less like a continent of people and more like a continent of supplies. They sent in people to create establishments, but only to take the supplies and send them back to the mainland to be manufactured into distributable products.
