Russia, Great Britain, Spain, Dutch, and France all participated.

Indonesia, Malaya, Singapore, and Burma were the most valuable areas.
How different were the varieties of colonial rule?
Only the French tried to convert the natives of their colonies to Christianity, even though both the French and British empires established education in their Asian colonies.
How were Central and Southeast Asia transformed by European conquests?
When the Europeans took over Asian land to form colonies, they enforced their laws and beliefs upon the population. They tried to make their colonies as productive as possible, sometimes destroying the habitats to do so.
